Cowboys Special Teams

November 7, 2009 by mikeanello

One interesting matchup in the upcoming Cowboys-Eagles game will be Dallas’ punt unit versus Philadelphia punt returner Desean Jackson.  The wideout has returned 14 punts for 219 yards with one 85-yard touchdown.  Cowboys punter Mat McBriar is one of the best at his position and he will have to play at a high level to keep the Eagles in poor field position.  The stats are courtesy of ESPN.com.  The image is courtesy of dallascowboys.com.

Cowboys -Seahawks review

November 6, 2009 by mikeanello

The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Seattle Seahawks 38-17 this past Sunday.  The Cowboys decided to go through the air against a horrible Seahawks team.  Quarterback Tony Romo went 21-36 for 256 yards and three touchdowns.  The best thing about Romo’s performance was that it was the third straight game without an interception.  Running back Marion Barber rushed for 53 yards and one touchdown.  It was really a team effort at wide reciever for Dallas.  Miles Austin caught five balls for 61 yards and one score.  Sam Hurd had a 36-yard touchdown and Roy Williams caught a seven-yard pass for a score.  Patrick Crayton proved he is a special teams playmaker with an 82-yard punt return that he took to the house.

Middle linebacker Keith Brooking had another impressive game with 11 total tackles, one sack, and two tackles for loss.  Middle linebacker Bobby Carpenter had four tackles and a sack.  Right outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware recorded Dallas’ third sack of the game.  Cornerback Terence Newman added seven tackles and had two pass deflections.  The statistics are courtesy of ESPN.com.  The image is courtesy of silentarchimedes.files.wordpress.com.

Rossum hurts hamstring

October 29, 2009 by mikeanello

Newly acquired defensive back Allen Rossum is already injured.  Rossum hurt his hamstring returning a kick in the game against the Atlanta Falcons this past Sunday.  He will be out 2-4 weeks.  Running back Felix Jones will take over for Rossum.  This Dallas Cowboys injury report is courtesy of Calvin Watkins.  The image is courtesy of msn.foxsports.com.

Ware gets contract extension

October 29, 2009 by mikeanello

It has finally happened Cowboys fans.  Right outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware has signed a contract extension through 2015.  Ware’s deal is for six years and is worth $78 million.  New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick compared Ware to Lawrence Taylor when Belichick was a coach on the New York Giants staff.  In the last few games, Ware is getting to the quarterback and taking him down.  He needs to continue his outstanding play.  The image is courtesy of thesportsmeister.com.

Cowboys-Falcons review

October 26, 2009 by mikeanello

The Dallas Cowboys welcomed the Atlanta Falcons into Cowboys Stadium yesterday afternoon and came away with a significant win.  One of the big stories was Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.  Romo threw for 311 yards and three touchdowns without throwing an interception.  The Falcons had the 21st ranked passing defense and it was obvious that Dallas’ offensive coordinator Jason Garrett wanted to exploit the Atlanta’s secondary.  Cowboys wideout Miles Austin, who was moved into the starting lineup replacing Patrick Crayton, had his second straight tremendous game in a row.  Austin caught six balls for 171 yards and had two touchdowns.  It is apparent that Austin is Romo’s go-to-guy and is the Cowboys deep threat to stretch the field vertically.  Dallas tight end Jason Witten got back on track grabbing five receptions for 53 yards.  Patrick Crayton was upset about losing his starting spot at wide reciever all week long.  Crayton used his demotion as motivation and had a great game.  He was only targeted twice all game, but one of those was a five-yard touchdown from Romo.  Crayton really broke the game open with a 73-yard punt return touchdown.  After rumblings in the media earlier in the week, Crayton has taken a mature look at his demotion and will continue to use it in a positive way.

On the defensive side of the ball, cornerbacks Orlando Scandrick and Mike Jenkins each had one interception.  Cowboys right outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware had two sacks on Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan.  Defensive tackle Jay Ratliff and DE Marcus Spears both sacked Ryan.  Middle linebacker Bradie James and strong safety Gerald Sensabaugh lead the Cowboys in tackles with seven total tackles each.  Austin and Romo seem to have developed a chemistry and the passing game is really coming together.  With the three-headed beast in the backfield getting healthy, Dallas has to find a way to use their running backs more.  The statistics are courtesy of ESPN.com.  The image is courtesy of zimbio.com.

Cowboys update

October 22, 2009 by mikeanello

The Dallas Cowboys have a long list of injured players.  Running back Felix Jones has a sprained PCL in his knee and has missed two games.  Wide reciever Roy Williams was hit by Denver Broncos MLB D.J. Williams and suffered brusied ribs.  Both players are practicing and (Roy) Williams will probably play.  Jones may play.  Strong safety Gerald Sensabaugh, who broke his left thumb, as he did at the University of North Carolina, is questionable for Sunday’s game at Atlanta.  Right guard Leonard Davis, who broke his thumb in the game against Kansas City, will play on Sunday.  Running back Marion Barber has been dealing with pain in his fractured thumb but will play on Sunday.  Right outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware has a stress fracture in his foot, but it will not keep him out of Sunday’s contest with the Falcons.  The injury information is courtesy of dallascowboys.com.  The image is courtesy of mkrob.com.

Offense is decieving

October 20, 2009 by mikeanello

The Dallas Cowboys offense has been decieving this season.  They have the second best offense in the NFL, averaging 420 yards per game but are still only 3-2.  This speaks to the team’s inconsistentcy.  Calvin Watkins of espndallas.com wrote a great article on the Cowboys’ inconsistentcy that can be found here.  Dallas is 11th in the league in points per game and converts only 36.7 % of their third down opportunities.  Hopefully, the Cowboys used their bye week to change these numbers.

Wade has job security

October 17, 2009 by mikeanello

According to ESPN.com, Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Philips will not be fired this season.  The Dallas media asked owner Jerry Jones about Philips’ job status and he said that Wade would finish the season “without equivocation”.  The image is courtesy of  Brian Behr of Getty Images.

Learning from the best

October 16, 2009 by mikeanello

Charles Haley, one of the best pass rushers to ever play in the NFL visited Valley Ranch and Cowboys ROLB DeMarcus Ware took advantage of the opportunity.  Ware found Haley and asked him all kinds of questions about rushing the quarterback.  Haley looked at tape of Ware to teach him the subtleties of the position.  According to Todd Archer of dallasnews.com, Ware realized that he needed to be more aggressive and use his strength to his advantage.  Archer’s article can be found here.  The image is courtesy of sportsillustrated.cnn.com.
